Over the weekend at the 2022 Down Under Championship Friday 18th of November to 20th November. AlphaFit athlete Jay Crouch was crowned the men's overall individual winner. We chat with Jay about what it was like competing in the Down Under Championship, the challenges and highlights of the competition, plans for the rest of the year and updates on his epic home gym.
We're 24 hours into the come down post event. First things first, how's the recovery from the competition and the after party? Any wild stories (or what happens at the AP stays at AP)?
Oh man, to be honest I was really sore Sunday morning before the final day of competition. Once the first workout was done I was feeling heaps better. Today I’m still sore but not too bad. The after party was epic. I got a pretty good buzz on to celebrate but nothing too hectic.
It's been a few months since The Games, your most recent previous appearance in the competition schedule. What was your preparation like in the lead-up to DUC? Any changes in strategy or lessons learned coming into this event?
Training camp was very much the same as it would be for a 3 day competition “semi final like”. I was focused and felt like I had a point to prove to myself after not getting the result I wanted at the games.
The seven workouts across the three day event schedule provided a decent variety of challenges. Which was your favourite event workout?
My favourite event was definitely event 4. I was looking forward to that event all weekend as I knew it was mine if I wanted it. Being a 12 round workout with a run buy-in I knew there was heaps of times to make moves and the workout definitely wasn’t won on the run. Also my first time wearing an AlphaFit weight vest and it was epic!
A unique experience for both athletes and spectators, how did you find having the mix of male and female athletes competing on the floor together?
I thought it was awesome! Especially to kick off the weekend with Randy face to face with the girls was an epic way to start!!
You made that Training Plate Carrier look like it weighed nothing during event 4. How did you find the workout with the added 9kg?
I touched on this above but honestly I don’t mind wearing a weight vest. Especially in this workout where all the movements are a strong point for me so I suppose that’s why it looked like it was nothing haha!!
The snatch ladder with double unders was your only finish outside the top 3. How did you approach the final two workouts after taking that points hit.
It’s no secret now that I would say the biggest hole in my game would be a 1RM snatch so I knew that event was going to be a damage control one. So I would say I put a little pressure on myself going into the last day. But in saying that I trusted myself the whole time that I could finish the job off strong on the final day and that’s what I did in event 6. Event 7 was a fast workout and by this point I had a decent points gap over 2nd so I went out there, had fun, did what I needed to do and didn’t take any silly risks.
The CrossFit and functional fitness community seem to be truly embracing the return to live competition. How was the atmosphere while competing?
It was seriously so epic! I made a post on Instagram, I was pumped with how busy it was on the Friday! Everyone knows friday is usually the quiet day. It was awesome to see and meet new people in the community.
What was your highlight of the weekend off the competition floor?
100% meeting everyone. It still blows me away that people want to get a photo with me haha!
A deserving win for both you and Maddie. How did it feel to share the top of the podium with her? More importantly, was there enough space in the back of the Jeep for two novelty cheques?
It was cool to see the result we both wanted come to life so it’s pretty special! Yes, luckily enough we fit the cheques and the big first place trophies in the Jeep hahaha!
Have you got any plans yet for the $10K? Will any be going towards your home gym? How’s that tracking?
Yes! High chance that prize money will find its way into the home gym haha! Our house is almost finished so once that is done completely and we have moved in, the gym will be finished off!
What’s on the cards for the rest of the year? Have you got anything in your sights before The 2023 Open, or are you taking a break and enjoying the off-season?
Good question. I’m still weighing up my options but I’m leaning towards enjoying time with my family and having an off season.
AlphaFit's biggest sale of the year kicks off on Black Friday, with up to 50% off brand new equipment plus heaps of clearance and ex-competition gear, including stock used in the DUC. What are your top tips for must have gear?
Oh my god! Absolute steals incoming! Honestly how could you go passed any of the equipment we saw at DUC? Everything is so nice to look at and even better to use! If I had to choose one thing for myself I’m copping one of those shorter barbells we used for Randy!!
